Climbing Kibaale Hill

There is a hill across from the property in Kibaale we have been looking forward to climbing with the kids, you can see Kibaale town really well, and all of the school’s property from the top, the kids were especially excited to find our house! It gets a little steep near the top of the hill, the kids did great the whole time though, and it only took us 40 minutes to get to the top from our house, we were pretty impressed with them!!

Medical Centre Ground Breaking

The first big construction project is to build the new medical centre. I didn’t realize that also meant designing it, and then re-designing it! I've also had to draw sketches for two other buildings, I guess I should have paid better attention in Grade 9 drafting!

The medical centre is coming along really well though, some days there have been up to 20 guys working on site!

Joel's view

Some pictures Joel took during our first couple of weeks here. He had a chance to go on some home visits, and really enjoyed those days; meeting new kids, families & animals!!!

Joel

Joel is settling in to his new life very well. We probably worry about him the most. He’s very sensitive and was having the hardest time leaving his family and friends in Canada. So far though, he is having a great time here!

This weekend he had a breakthrough. There was group of children playing soccer right out in front of our house. They didn’t come and ask him to join so he mustered up the courage to ask them if he could play too! He later told us that this was his favourite night since we got here.

Since arriving here, he has had this fascination with making money. Weird, we know, but maybe it’s because that’s what everyone here is doing. Everyone has something for sale. The first week, we found him trying to sell a pile of broken bricks to a group of children! We have since given him a job at the chicken coop. He goes down there 2 or 3 times a day and collects eggs, which is one of his chores now to receive an allowance from us. He loves having a “job”.

Mpigi visit

This past weekend, on our way home from Kampala, we took some time to stop in on our friends in Mpigi. Our kids were so excited to spend some time with everyone they got to know so well last spring.

We never know for sure the greeting we'll get after a break between visits, but it was amazing. The kids came running from everywhere to greet us and our kids! They all looked so healthy and happy; we had a wonderful time with everyone!!

Playing in Mpigi

Fun in Kampala

We went to Kampala on Sunday, we will go once a month to stock up on groceries mostly. I think it will be busy when we go, getting everything we've put on our lists from the month before!! As well, its a long drive for our kids (4 hours if driving straight thru) so we were really happy to have found a great restaurant for them to just be kids at!

It is a steak restaurant, with a big menu, especially for Uganda. The kids ordered pizza, and were very happy with that, the best part though was the play area! Two trampolines, 5 playstation stations, and even a mini movie theater! After we got over the culture shock of where we were, the kids played for hours!!

Getting Eggs

One of the farm projects on the Kibaale property is egg laying chickens. There are 180 chickens right now, and 550 baby chicks that are just 5 days old!!

So to go and get our eggs we take our tray to the chicken coop, and pay Steven 4 000 shillings for 30 eggs, that is about $2.80 Canadian. It was a family event the first time, mostly because the kids were pretty excited to see the chicks!!

A lot of chicks, they're pretty cute this tiny!!
